Mr. Shapiro is a veteran of the music industry with over 15 years of experience. Shapiro’s facility with artist development and his long-term approach to breaking and nurturing artists is renowned in the music industry. Before opening his own company through which he consults to Songmasters and to AOL Music, he was Co-President of Atlantic Records. He is the only senior executive in the music business whose career path at a single label has taken him from publicity to presidency.
Shapiro joined Atlantic in 1993 as Vice President of Media and Artist Relations. In 1994, he was promoted to Senior Vice President/West Coast General Manager, supervising the operation of the company’s L.A. office. With his appointment as Atlantic’s Senior Vice President/General Manager in the spring of 1995, Shapiro relocated to the label’s New York headquarters and began to oversee the company’s day-to-day activities. In the fall of 1997, Shapiro was promoted as Atlantic's Executive Vice President/General Manager, recognizing his increased involvement in virtually every area of the company’s operations. Shapiro oversaw a diverse array of departments within Atlantic, including Marketing (embracing Advertising & Merchandising, Product Development, and Video Production), Media & Artist Relations, Sales, New Media, Video Promotion, Artist Development, Creative Services, and International.
During his tenure at Atlantic, Shapiro was responsible for establishing or enhancing the careers of Jewel, Brandy, Phil Collins, Tori Amos, Lil’ Kim, Stone Temple Pilots, Buena Vista Social Club, Sean Paul, P.O.D, Hootie & the Blowfish, Poe, Duncan Sheik, Matchbox 20, Sugar Ray, The Corrs, Nappy Roots and Led Zeppelin, among others. He also served as Executive Producer of albums for Jewel, Brandy, The Corrs, Linda Eder and Duncan Sheik.
Shapiro also championed a string of innovative, non-traditional cross-marketing initiatives including high-profile partnerships with the Wilhelmina modeling agency and Cover Girl cosmetics; special projects in conjunction with such publications as Teen People, Seventeen, Vogue and Glamour; and a number of other unique ventures.
Shapiro serves on the boards of the City of Hope’s Music & Entertainment Group and The Bobby Brooks Literacy Foundation as well as being active in many charities. He is an honors graduate of Vassar College.
